TEN people have been arrested for drug trafficking in Chitambo district, while a Choppies security guard has been stabbed in Serenje.
Central Province Commissioner of Police Lemekani Chirwa said in an interview yesterday that police in Serenje intercepted an unregistered white Toyota Hiace minibus in the Mulaushi gold mine area on Wednesday and recovered suspected marijuana, codeine and cheese.
“Four women were found with the substances. They are Rebecca Daka, 35, and Grace Chibuye, 27, both of Kanyama Compound in Lusaka; Brenda Chola, 27, of North Park in Kapiri; and Elestina Banda, 33, of Msisi Compound in Lusaka, who was found with bottles of suspected codeine,” Chirwa said.
He also said three other passengers were found with drugs and detained awaiting formalities from the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).
“Obvious Kwelele, 29, of Mulungushi area in Mumbwa and Given Mbewe, 36, of 70-70 Lusaka West were found with cheese, while Mathews Phiri, 20, of Chimate area in Petauke was found with codeine,” he said.
Chirwa said the driver identified as Musa Banda, 42, of New Kasama in Lusaka and his two conductors Jackson Mwewa, 27, of Lilanda and Charles Banda, 23, of Chipata Compound in Lusaka were also apprehended.
“All 10 suspects are in custody and will be handed over to the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) for further investigations and other formalities,” he said.
In a separate incident, a Choppies security guard identified as Blessings Chanda, 24, was stabbed twice on the lower back while on duty on Tuesday in Serenje District.
Chirwa said Chanda left his post at the entrance to smoke behind the shop around 08:00 hours when he was attacked by an unknown person.
“He was rushed to Serenje District Hospital where he was admitted and discharged on Tuesday. A docket has been opened, and no arrest has been made yet,” he said.
