Cholera deaths reach 41 as cases soar

By Ludia Ngwadzai

ZAMBIA has recorded 2,105 cholera cases and 41 deaths since the outbreak was declared on July 28, 2026 with Lusaka Province accounting for the highest number of infections.

The latest outbreak update released by the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) shows that 75 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours leading to November 4, bringing the cumulative number of infections to 2,105.

Of the 75 new cases, four were confirmed while no new deaths were recorded during the period under review.

The update indicates that 91 patients are currently hospitalised, while 1,973 people recovered and discharged, leaving the country with 41 cumulative deaths.

Lusaka remains the worst-affected area, recording 1,276 cases, followed by Chibombo with 321, Chongwe with 118 and Chilanga with 89.

Other affected districts include Chiengi with 76 cases, Mpulungu with 63, Mwansabombwe with 39, Nsama with 30, Nchelenge with 24 and Mwense with 15.

The outbreak had now spread to 24 districts across seven provinces, highlighting the continued geographical spread of the disease beyond the capital.

Other affected districts include Mumbwa (13), Monze (9), Chisamba (5), Kafue (5), Kaputa (5), Shibuyunji (4), Chikankata (3), Kitwe (2), Mbala (2) and Solwezi (2).

Kalomo, Livingstone, Mazabuka and Ndola have each recorded one case.

The latest figures also indicate an increase from the 1,958 cases and 40 deaths reported as at November 2, representing 147 additional cases and one additional death within two days.

ZNPHI urged members of the public to observe preventive measures, including washing hands with soap and clean water, drinking boiled or treated water, cooking food thoroughly and using clean toilets.

The Institute advised members of the public to seek medical attention immediately at the nearest health facility in the event of watery diarrhoea or vomiting.
