Zambia seeks China partnership in sports infrastructure development

GOVERNMENT has engaged the Zambia Chinese Association in a bid to development sports infrastructure across the country.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Arts Elvis Nkandu said Government is committed to enhancing infrastructure development through partnering with the Zambia Chinese Association under leadership of its president Wu Ming.
“The government through the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts reaffirms its commitment to enhancing national infrastructure and youth development by engaging strategic partners. The Ministry has explored areas of collaboration aimed at improving key infrastructure, including sports facilities and youth resource centres.
“As part of the ongoing rehabilitation of major stadia, including the National Heroes and Levy Mwanawasa Stadiums, the government is open to partnering with China to modernize these facilities,” said Nkandu.
He said the discussions would focus on integration of solar energy systems into the sports infrastructure not only to power the stadia but also support surrounding communities.
Nkandu said this initiative would be extended to all 25 youth resource centres countrywide.
“In line with these efforts, the Ministry is set to undertake a working visit to China next month to strengthen bilateral cooperation in infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and skills training, “said Nkandu
He said from this interaction, Zambia stood to benefit from quality affordable equipment from China to support youth entrepreneurship, particularly in sectors where equipment costs posed a challenge.
Meanwhile, Wu said China would continue to explore investment in many sectors of Zambia’s economy.
Wu said Chinese investors were interested to explore opportunities in the energy sector and infrastructure development.
