Consumer body demands ‘disappearing’ electricity units report

By Thandizo Banda

THE Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has expressed concern at the delay in releasing the findings on fast-depleting electricity units.

In a statement seen by The Mast yesterday, ZACA executive secretary Juba Sakala said consumers had repeatedly complained about the fast depletion of Zesco electricity units.

Sakala said the prepaid electricity units were running out quicker than expected, with some households reporting that units finish within days despite minimal usage.

“Consumers deserve answers. The silence is creating suspicion and frustration among our consumers. This matter needs to be resolved quickly,” he said.

He said his association was disappointed that, despite regulatory bodies committing to investigate and address the matter of concern, nothing yet had come out.

“The association notes that the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), Zesco Limited and Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) have promised to investigate and publish findings, but months have passed with no report,” Sakala said.

Sakala warned that the delays undermine public trust and confidence in the energy sector, as the silence fuels speculation about hidden tariff adjustments or faulty metering systems.

He urged the authority to quickly make the findings public and outline corrective measures if discrepancies were confirmed.

The association further called on the government to intervene, saying electricity was a basic need.

“… and unexplained losses are hurting low-income households already battling high living costs,” said Sakala.
