Malanji, Yamba face judgement tomorrow

By Esther Chisola

JUDGEMENT in the case of former foreign affairs minister Joseph Malanji and his co-accused former secretary to the treasury Fredson Yamba could not be heard yesterday in a Lusaka magistrates court.

Yesterday, Malanji appeared before the court after being reported sick.

When the case came up for judgment, acting chief resident magistrate Irene Wishimanga, who was supposed to deliver it, was not present.

Malanji and Yamba appeared before acting chief resident magistrate Silvia Munyinya, who informed them that their judgment would be read tomorrow, Wednesday and adjourned the case.

“Your trial court is not around. You have appeared before me for an adjournment. May this matter come up on September 3, 2025, for judgment,” she said.

Malanji and Yamba are jointly charged with 10 counts of possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Allegations are that between January 2020 and August 2021, Yamba, then serving as secretary to the treasury, irregularly authorised the transfer of K108 million to the Zambian Mission in Turkey for real estate procurement.

Malanji is also accused of possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime, among them a Bell 430 helicopter, a Bell 206 Jet Ranger, Gibson Royal Hotel and three houses in Silverest, Chongwe.

Last week, the case failed to take off because of the absence of Malanji, who was reported to be unwell.

A medical doctor, Dr Beros Vangu, 44, from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) and a part-time doctor at Lusaka Trust Hospital, was subpoenaed.

He confirmed attending to Malanji then.
