LUSAK Archdiocese Archbishop Alick Banda yesterday appeared for mention in a case in which he is charged with being in possession of property reasonably suspected to have been unlawfully obtained.
Archbishop Banda appeared before magistrate Mwandu Nakazwe after which the case was adjourned to November 3 for the beginning of trial. His K80, 000 bail was extended.
Allegations are that between April 22, 2021 and December 27, 2023, Archbishop Banda had in his possession a blue Toyota Hilux registration number ALF 7734 belonging to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA). Meanwhile, the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has set November 16, 2026 as the date for trial in a case in which former first lady Esther Lungu is jointly charged with four others over the alleged theft of three motor vehicles and a certificate of title.
This was when the case came up for mention and fixing of trial dates before magistrate Mbuvwana Simvula in chambers yesterday.
Lungu is also charged with allegedly possessing or concealing US$400,000 suspected to be proceeds of crime.
The alleged offences date back to the period between August 2021 and September 2022.
