Term limits removal creates tyrants – Imboela

THE removal of term limits in Zambia will enable the creation of tyrants which the people of Zambia do not want, National Democratic Congress (NDC) president Saboi Imboela has said.
In an interview with The Mast Imboela said the reason terms were put in place was because people did not want the creation of tyrants or dictators.
“Those that created the term limits knew that if they removed them it would be the beginning of the creation of tyrants because people would now be untouchable,” she said.
Imboela said the country did not want dictators and that when the country went back to multi-party democracy they introduced the term limit to remove the creation of dictators.
She said even the late sixth republican president Edgar Lungu was fought and taken to court where it was agreed that he was not eligible to contest the 2026 election.
“What is happening what has changed the UPND fought Lungu until they even went to court so why are they now pushing this narrative,” Imboela wondered.
She urged Zambians to speak out because the country’s democracy was under threat.
The United Party for National Development (UPND) had caused a hostile takeover of Parliament because it had already reached a two thirds majority.
Imboela said what would happen was that whatever the UPND wanted could be done and if they wanted to change the constitution they could change it because they had the numbers.
She said what Hichilema needed to do was to groom the person that would take over from him and not a situation where he wanted to cling to power at all costs.
