Opposition disunity shouldn’t excite UPND, Kafwaya warns

 By Adrian Mwanza

THE confusion in the opposition must not excite the United Party for National Development (UPND) to think that it will easily win the August elections, says Lunte Member of Parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya.

In an interview with The Mast, Kafwaya said the confusion in the opposition was not a benchmark of losing an election because power was with the people.

He said Zambians were the only ones to decide who would be the next president after the August elections and not politically exposed individuals whose loyalty was to the party they supported.

“The UPND should not think that because several people have expressed interest in taking part in the election, then it means that there is disunity,” Kafwaya said.

He said it was also wrong to think or suggest that a fragmented opposition could not unite at any given time.

“My advice is that UPND should take a chill pill and even a tranquiliser because they should not think they’re going to win this election easily just because we have over 20 candidates,” Kafwaya warned.

He said instead of talking about the confusion in the opposition, the UPND should be proud of its performance by showing the people of Zambia what it had done as it sought re-election in August.

Kafwaya said depending on the pitfalls of the opposition to reclaim a second term of office was a sign that the UPND had failed and had nothing to show to the people of Zambia.

“What the UPND needed to do was tell the Zambian people what they had done for the people and not count on the opposition’s misfortunes. The people of Zambia are the true custodians of power; therefore, the UPND should not count and get excited about having an easy ride just because of the confusion,” said Kafwaya.

Over 25 opposition political party leaders have declared interest in standing as candidates in the August elections.
