Most MPs, councillors going, expert warns

By Thandizo Banda

MOST current members of Parliament (MPs) and ward councillors may not retain their seats after the August 13 general elections, says political researcher Dr Cephas Mukuka.

Speaking in an interview with The Mast, Dr Mukuka said the election would shape the political direction beyond the August general elections.

He said it was also clear that the elections would be a tough contest, mainly as a result of the growing dissatisfaction of the voters against the current leaders.

“Most members of Parliament and councillors may find it difficult to face the electorate whom they had abandoned, and the few that used to visit their areas have not done much to warrant another mandate,” Dr Mukuka said.

He cited public frustration over unfulfilled promises, power challenges and economic hardships as other reasons citizens wanted a change of leaders from the top downwards.

Meanwhile, Dr Mukuka warned political parties against fielding unpopular candidates.

He said Zambians were not looking for wealthy candidates but those who were available to listen to the challenges they were facing and inspire solutions.

“Political parties must prioritise candidates with genuine grassroots support and a track record of community engagement and passion, rather than just relying on financial muscle,” Dr Mukuka said.

Dr Mukuka, who is Christian Democratic Party (CDP) secretary general, said the electorate were looking for new leaders.

He said most voters had lost confidence in the current leaders, who had failed to deliver promises in their respective constituencies and wards.

“The upcoming August elections will likely be a crucial test for Zambia’s democracy, with many hoping for more accountable and effective elected leaders,” Dr Mukuka said.

He said the increase and distribution of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) alone was not a measure of success, as it was a commonly contentious issue, with many people alleging favouritism and unequal allocation of the money.
