HH urges Zambians to embrace farming

By Adrian Mwanza

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has called on Zambians to embrace farming, saying the sector has the potential to contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth.

Speaking during a church service at the United Church of Zambia (UCZ) in Luanshya yesterday, Hichilema challenged Zambians to take up farming so that the country could increase its production.

“Mwebene Luanshya mulelima [Luanshya residents, you must work hard by farming]. Let us not be a nation of consumers but one that produces as well,” he said.

President Hichilema challenged Zambians to target crops with ready export markets, citing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as an example.

Hichilema said despite inheriting a number of challenges, his government was working to ensure improved livelihoods for the people.

The President said his government had inherited a huge debt burden from the previous administration, which had stifled the country’s growth.

“We found a lot of debt which was squeezing the country like a python squeezing the life out of its prey but we are working hard to ensure that we correct this problem,” he said.

Hichilema urged members of Parliament in Luanshya to work hard.

He said people in the area entrusted them with the mandate to work for them.

Hichilema also appealed for unity among Zambians as the nation was heading towards elections.

“Mwaimba sana bwino inyimbo iyo. [You have sung well that song], I will instruct Levy Ngoma [Hichilema’s Police Advisor at State House] to see your youth leadership. We are making a small donation and Levy will see you,”  Hichilema said.
