IG promotes WBC bantamweight champion ‘Sniper’

INSPECTOR General of Police Graphel Musamba has promoted newly crowned World Boxing Council (WBC) Bantamweight champion David ‘Sniper’ Mwale from the position of sergeant to inspector.
Mwale defeated Ghana’s Michael ‘Dercardi’ Nelson to win the vacant WBC title during a boxing match at the Government Complex in Lusaka last Saturday.
The 26-year-old, who is also Africa Boxing Union (ABU) Bantamweight Champion, has become the second Zambian to win a WBC title in the men’s category after late Lottie Mwale who defeated another Ghanaian Rae Acquaye in 1990 in the eighth round of the scheduled 12 rounds at the Independence Stadium in Lusaka.
Mwale said the promotion was a motivation as he prepared to defend his WBC title later this year.
He commended the Zambia Police Service for the support rendered to him throughout his boxing career.
“First of all, I would like to thank the Zambia Police Service through the Inspector General of police [Graphel Musamba] for the promotion…this is a motivation as I prepare for my defense title,” Mwale said.
He promised to continue working hard.
“To my all my fans, I am so grateful for their support. I promise to continue working hard and bring more honours to the nation. I will not disappoint anyone,” he said.
After winning the ABU title in 2023, the Zambia Police Service promoted Mwale from the position of constable to sergeant, a position he held until his new rank.
Musamba commended Mwale for his outstanding performance against Nelson.
He urged the boxer to remain disciplined and aspire for more medals in his career.
“The achievement of Inspector Mwale is a historic triumph that has made the Zambia Police Service and the entire nation of Zambia proud,” Musamba said.
Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) manager Christopher Malunga said Mwale’s achievement was a great inspiration to the boxing industry.
He urged upcoming boxers to emulate Mwale if they are to go far in the sport.
“We are grateful to the Zambia Police Service high command for supporting our boxer. I can assure you that the boy is going very far with the support that the Police have been giving us,” Malunga said.
He thanked Musamba for promoting Mwale.
