ZCTU concerned over 10 per cent job reservation for disabled people

THE Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has expressed concern that talks around the Ten percent reservation for persons living with disabilities for employment is not bearing any fruit.
ZCTU General Secretary Joy Beene said it was sad to note that persons living with disabilities have continued to be sidelined especially in the private sector.
Beene said the country will only move in the right direction where employment was concerned, if the policy of the Ten percent reservation was agreed upon and implemented by both the government and the private sector.
“We keep talking as a country about leaving no one behind but what is obtaining on the ground is of the opposite. Talking of buildings, most of them including those that are newly built do not accommodate persons with disabilities,” he said
Beene said this, itself prevented the employment of persons with disabilities because they deliberately overlook the aspect, which he said was very important in the actualization of such policy.
He warned that overlooking modern building infrastructure and design was a direct denial of persons with disabilities, as they could not have access to certain areas.
Beene has since called on the government to ensure that talks concerning the policy were concluded as quickly as possible to ensure that no one was left behind.
