KYOTO Prefecture Governor Nashiwaki Takatoshi has praised President Hakainde Hichilema and his administration for their commitment to promoting peace, democracy and regional cooperation since taking office.

Takatoshi made these remarks during a dinner and traditional Japanese tea ceremony at the State Guest House where he hosted Hichilema.

He commended Zambia for its smooth transition of power and democratic elections, acknowledging the country’s strong democratic credentials.

This is according to a statement released yesterday by State House chief communications specialist Clayson Hamasaka.

“Takatoshi’s remarks coincided with Hichilema’s official visit to Japan, which was aimed at deepening bilateral ties. As part of his tour, President Hichilema visited Horiba Technologies Group and the Sustaina Kyoto South Clean Centre,” the statement said.

Horiba Technologies, a global leader in analytical and measurement instruments, specialises in cutting-edge health diagnostic equipment.

And Hichilema reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with Horiba to improve healthcare services in Zambia by equipping medical facilities with advanced diagnostic tools.

He emphasised the critical role of accurate diagnosis in healthcare and invited Horiba to establish a regional hub in Zambia.

“Accurate diagnosis is fundamental to healthcare as it informs treatment decisions and improves patient outcomes. Our government remains committed to ensuring that all health facilities across Zambia are equipped with high-quality diagnostic tools,” Hichilema said.

At the Sustaina Kyoto South Clean Centre, a waste management facility that converts waste into energy, Hichilema directed the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to explore replicating the model in Zambia.

He highlighted the need for sustainable waste management and energy diversification, stressing that integrating waste-to-energy solutions could help reduce reliance on hydroelectric power and contribute to the national grid.

Later in the day, Hichilema and his delegation visited Kinkakuji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Braving the afternoon snow, he expressed admiration for the temple’s rich history and cultural significance.

Hichilema emphasised the importance of cultural preservation in boosting Zambia’s tourism sector, later sharing his reflections on social media.

The temple’s architecture and stunning gardens reflect Japan’s deep cultural heritage. “It reminds us of the value of preserving our own traditions and historical sites, which play a vital role in shaping our collective identity and strengthening our tourism industry,” he said.

Hichilema’s visit to Japan underscored Zambia’s commitment to fostering international partnerships in governance, healthcare, sustainable development and cultural exchange.
