Mpongwe District ramps up Ebola preparedness amid DRC outbreak

By a Correspondent

AUTHORITIES in Mpongwe District have intensified epidemic preparedness measures following an outbreak of Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Speaking during a public discussion in Mpongwe, District Commissioner Mwitwa Mwambashi assured Zambians that the country had not recorded any cases of the disease.

He said the outbreak in the DRC serves as a reminder that infectious diseases could easily cross borders through human movement and trade.

“As Mpongwe District, we are committed to ensuring that our health facilities, surveillance systems, and emergency response teams are fully prepared to detect and respond promptly to any suspected case,” Mwambashi said.

Mwambashi said the Dstrict Health office, in collaboration with cooperating partners, had strengthened disease surveillance, community sensitisation, infection prevention and control measures, as well as rapid reporting mechanisms.

He urged community leaders, healthcare workers, schools, churches and residents to support the district’s preparedness efforts by maintaining good hygiene practices, reporting unusual illnesses without delay, and relying on information from credible health authorities.

“Preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. By working together, remaining vigilant, and adhering to public health guidelines, we can protect our communities and prevent the spread of dangerous diseases,” he said.

Mwambashi called for unity and collective action in safeguarding the health and well-being of Mpongwe residents.

He emphasized the importance of community participation in disease prevention efforts and encouraged residents to remain alert while supporting public health initiatives aimed at keeping the district safe.
