World should intervene in UPND dictatorship – Dr Mwelwa

THE international community should not wait until it is too late long after the United Party for National Development (UPND) has decimate the opposition, the Tonse Alliance has said.
Spokesperson Dr Lawrence Mwelwa said in an interview with The Mast the international community needed to quickly intervene because the country was now becoming hostile for the opposition.
“I want to urge the international community not to sit idle and watch as the political space is slowly being shrunk by this administration,” Dr Mwelwa said.
He said opposition leaders were being victimised by this regime as they were being harassed daily.
Dr Mwelwa said all opposition leaders deemed as a threat had been detained by the police at the instigation of the UPND government.
“We saw opposition leaders like Dr Fred M’membe and Tonse Alliance president Brian Mundubile being arrested on trumped-up charges,” he said.
Dr Mwelwa said it was the responsibility of the international community to quickly move in because the country was spiraling in a dictatorship.
He said if nothing was done then the democratic space would surely crumble because the current regime did not condone any opposition voices.
Dr Mwelwa said it was difficult for people to freely campaign as police were unleashed just to frustrate the process.
“It is really hard for us to do certain things like campaigning because the Zambia Police Service is an appendage of the UPND and is doing everything possible to frustate our efforts,” he said.
