A 10-YEAR-OLD girl of Chipangali District in Eastern Province has allegedly been defiled by a Malawian man only identified as Raphael.

Eastern Province Commissioner of Police Robertson Mweemba said the victim was a grade four pupil at a named primary school within the district.

Mweemba said police officer’s at Mgubudu Police Post received a complaint from the victim’s mother that her daughter had been defiled.

“On Saturday, February 24, 2026, at around 19:00, the girl left home to go and watch television at her uncle’s residence in the same village. While there, she went outside to play with other children in the village, and at around 20:00 hours, she returned home without raising any complaints,” Mweemba said.

He, however, said on January 26, 2026 at around 08:00, the victim was approached by the suspect only identified as Danny, who expressed concern about rumours he heard regarding her being defiled.

“He explained that whilst at a trading centre within the district, he heard that the survivor was defiled by Raphael. Unaware of the incident, the survivor’s mother immediately went to her daughter’s school where in the presence of the teacher , the survivor disclosed that while playing with friends that evening on January 26, 2026, the suspect grabbed her, pulled her to a dark place, had carnal knowledge of her, and threatened to beat her if she told anyone,” Mweemba said.

He said the teacher advised the woman to immediately report the case to the police as it was criminal in nature.

Mweemba confirmed that a docket of defilement had opened and investigations in the matter were instituted.

“No arrest has been made so far, while efforts to apprehend the suspect, whose whereabouts remain unknown, continue,” he said.
