Prison break in Mpika, 4 on the run

By a Correspondent

THE Zambia Police Service has launched a manhunt for four prisoners after they escaped from Lubambala Correctional Facility in Mpika District of Muchinga Province.

Muchinga Province commissioner of police Dennis Moola said the prison break happened Saturday at around 11:00 hours.

Moola said around 11:00 hours on Saturday, 29 prisoners were assigned to harvest maize at the prison’s farm before the quartet ran away.

“The four escaped while they were at Lubambala Farm, where they had gone to harvest maize with 29 other inmates. No further details for now, but we have launched a manhunt to have them arrested,” he said.

Moola said officers at the facility conducted a search, but all efforts proved futile as the four could not be recaptured after breaking out of the prison.

He identified the prisoners as Peter Silungwe, who was facing the offence of breaking into a building and committing a felony therein, Philimon Muwowo, 26, who was facing the offence of burglary and theft.

Others were Markson Chabinga, 25, who was facing the offence of burglary and theft, and Victor Chilongo, 22, who was facing the offence of burglary and theft.

“A docket has been opened, investigations have been instituted, and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the escapees. These are dangerous criminals and we shall not rest until they are brought to book. Our appeal to Zambians, let’s work together in an effort to bring them back,” he said.
