‘Poverty, divisions real threat to UPND’

THE high levels of poverty and divisions in the country under the United Party for National Development (UPND) threaten their stay in power beyond next year’s general elections, Leadership Movement (LM) president Richard Silumbe has said.
Addressing a meeting in Kanyama Compound Sunday, Dr Silumbe said the biggest opposition against the UPND and President Hakainde Hichilema were the lies they had told the people of Zambia, including that they would end load shedding and poverty.
He said the UPND had failed to give the people of Zambia decent jobs with a decent income.
“Are you happy to live in the manner you are living? Hunger, poverty and divisions in the country are worrying all of us, and this is because the UPND government has failed to address these challenges. Load shedding under this government has tripled; it has become worse and that is their biggest opposition to this government and not a political party,” Dr Silumbe said.
He warned that the greatest threat to the UPND’s hold on power was not opposition politicians, but the very poverty that had gripped the nation.
Dr Silumbe said his tour of Kanyama had shown him that the daily hardships confronting residents had become insurmountable and only a focused leadership would be able to deal with that.
He criticised the UPND government’s policies, saying they benefited and protected foreigners instead of the people of Zambia.
Dr Silumbe said a caring government prioritised its citizens.
