ZACA demands transparency in maize export deal
By Thandizo Banda
THE Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has urged the government to ensure transparency and strict monitoring in the export of 500,000 metric tonnes of maize.
ZACA executive secretary Juba Sakala said authorities should publish the names of all individuals and companies granted export licences.
Sakala said that would promote accountability and transparency in ensuring that the approved allocation would not eat into local consumption demand.
He warned against a repeat of last year’s excessive exports, which contributed to local shortages and higher mealie-meal prices.
Sakala said the government should be mindful of maintaining a sound national food security, which should be a priority.
“While we understand that the government needs to raise revenue, it is important to ensure this process is managed transparently and responsibly,” he said.
He urged the government to first publish a list of all entities and individuals granted export licences.
“This will help prevent any party from exceeding the approved quota. This will help the government to know how safe our national food reserves are. At least for once, let’s do the right thing by safeguarding our food security,” he said.
ZACA called for a strong monitoring mechanism to be put in place to ensure that only the authorised 500,000 metric tonnes are exported.
“We must avoid a repeat of last year’s situation, where excessive maize exports contributed to local shortages and higher mealie-meal prices,” he said.
He expressed fear that, with the unpredictability of climate change, it was difficult for anyone to assume that the coming season would be as favourable as last year.
” Protecting national food security must always come first,” said Sakala.
