Foloko commends ZA vision

NATIONAL Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) president Alfred Foloko says bringing elite athletes into the fold of sports governance sets a strong precedent for athlete centered development.
In a congratulation message to the newly elected Zambia Athletics (ZA) leadership led by Bernard Bwalya, Foloko said the proactive and visionary step the association had taken to recognise former runners was a welcome move.
The ZA executive had included Olympians Samuel Matete and Sydney Siame to their leadership structures ahead of various international competitions.
“I wish to commend the proactive and visionary steps you [ZA] has taken in the early days of your leadership, particularly the integration of distinguished Olympians such as Samuel Matete and Sydney Siame into the association’s structures,” Foloko said.
He said the experience of both Matete and Siame would be instrumental to inspiring upcoming runners in the country.
He added that the duo had what it takes to help foster a positive move in promoting the sport.
“Their experience will be instrumental to inspiring emerging talent and strengthening the overall capacity of Zambia Athletics,” he said.
Matete has been appointed as national team coach while Siame is athletes’ commission.
Meanwhile, Foloko has urged the ZA executive to continue building on the promises made to promote the sport.
He said the election of Bwalya and his executive reflected the trust the athletics family had in his leadership.
“On behalf of the National Olympic Committee of Zambia, I extend heartfelt congratulations to you (Major Bernard Bwalya) and all the newly elected members of your executive committee,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the executive would work towards a common goal of promoting good governance.
“We are confident that under your [Bwalya] leadership, Zambia Athletics will continue to grow and reach new heights,” he said.
Foloko reaffirmed the strong relationship that the NOCZ and ZA shared.
He emphasised the importance of collaboration in raising Zambia’s sporting profile high both at local and international levels.
“Zambia Athletics remains a valued partner of the NOCZ. We are committed to supporting your efforts as you begin this important new chapter,” he said.
