Govt lying that people have agreed, says bishop

By Thandizo Banda in Kabwe

THE government must listen to the cries of the people because they represent God’s own voice, Kabwe Catholic Diocese Bishop Clement Mulenga has said.

Bishop Mulenga said government leaders should exhibit high levels of integrity while playing a role of serving the people they led.

He said for the leadership to effectively respond to the needs of the people they served, they needed to listen to their cries.

Delivering a homily during the Palm Sunday at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kabwe, Bishop Mulenga said it was unfortunate to witness how those in authority had continued to manipulate critical voices in the governance of the country.

“We hear them lie that people have agreed [when not, when no consultation has been made]…or people have said so and so…,” Bishop Mulenga said in apparent reference to the Constitution amendment process, which the UPND government and President Hakainde Hichilema have said Zambians have agreed to.

Bishop Mulenga, urged Christians to remain steadfast in the midst of hard times, manipulation and abdication by analysing situations and seek the truth regarding the state of affairs of the nation.

“We need to pray to the Lord who is our liberator and in whom we are assured of peace and freedom from any form of excruciating pain and sufferings [we are experiencing],” he said.

Bishop Mulenga encouraged Christians that as they celebrate the beginning of Esther they must demonstrate their faith by living honest lives – free from lies and manipulation, by promoting honest brotherhood and sisterhood.
