FPI condemns harassment of journalists

THE Zambia Free Press Initiative (FPI) has condemned police and correctional officers for chasing and obstructing journalists covering the trial of opposition leader Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu at Solwezi High Court.
FPI Founder Joan Chirwa said in a statement yesterday that an online video reviewed by the organisation shows officers leading journalists away disrespectfully as they tried to cover the high-profile proceedings.
Chirwa described the incident as intimidation and unnecessary obstruction of journalists doing lawful work.
“Protecting journalists is not a favour; it is an essential part of protecting the public’s right to know,” Chirwa said.
She said journalists were not adversaries in the administration of justice and their presence promotes transparency and accountability.
Chirwa said law enforcement must respect press freedom.
“Court proceedings are matters of public interest. Any restrictions on media access should be lawful, necessary and proportionate, not arbitrarily imposed,” she said.
She demanded that the Zambia Police Service, Zambia Correctional Service and judicial authorities stop intimidation of journalists, uphold media rights, issue clear guidelines on media access to court premises, and investigate the Solwezi incident.
“A free press must be able to report on the administration of justice without fear or intimidation,” Chirwa said.
