Saboi drags 3rd term advocates over thorns

MEMBERS of Parliament (MPs) and individuals promoting a third term bid for President Hakainde Hichilema do not mean well for Zambia, says National Democratic Congress (NDC) president Saboi Imboela.
In an interview with The Mast yesterday, Imboela said the third term proponents’ reasoning that Hichilema deserved a third term because he was a good president was their personal opinion and not based on facts on the ground.
“A good president or a bad president is a relative term and is based on their opinion because the construction needs to deal with facts. The construction is not about how good a person is,” she said.
“The Constitution protects the country during the time when you have a bad leader. So if they really want to change the Constitution because they think HH is a good president they should think about when Zambia will have a bad leader,” Imboela said.
She said the Constitution and the law were there for such a time.
“Not for a sunny day but for a rainy day, so they need to remember that,” Imboela said.
And Imboela says as the National Assembly begins sittings, she expects it to have parliamentarians who should speak for the people.
She said the MPs might not speak partisan issues because everyone knew that the current Parliament was basically a one-party state because even other political parties that have members have been compromised.
“So we are hoping that the parliamentarians at least do [what is] good for the people by ensuring that they speak issues that affect the people and they should not be partisan in nature,” Imboela said.
She said the sad part was that Zambia now has an increased Parliament with a reduced voice.
The country should have MPs who would come out strongly and defend the Constitution instead of appeasing those who nominated or appointed them.
