CEC tops LuSE trades with K1m turnover

By Mast Reporter

THE Lusaka Securities Exchange (LuSE) recorded a turnover of K2.17 million on 490,591 shares traded last week, with Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) Plc the biggest contributor at more than K1 million.

According to the Stockbrokers Zambia Limited Weekly Equity and Economic Report for the trading week from October 9 to 16, 2026, CEC was the highest contributor to turnover among listed companies on the local bourse in terms of turnover.

The LuSE All Share Index (LASI), the principal stock market index of the exchange, measures overall performance of the share market by tracking changes in share prices. It indicates whether the Zambian equity market is generally rising or falling.

“In terms of turnover, the market closed at K2.17 million (US$108,278) on 490,591 shares traded, marking a decrease in comparison to last week’s K5.38 million (US$268,947) on 672,307 shares. The highest turnover contributor this week was CEC at 46.37%,” the report read.

It added that among the listed entities whose share prices dropped were Zanaco Plc, Zambia Sugar Plc and Chilanga Cement Plc, which all recorded marginal declines to close at K8.95, K67.99 and K60.98 per share, respectively.

“DCZM (Dot Com Zambia Plc) was the lead price gainer on the exchange, recording an increase of K2.90 (US$0.14), or roughly 11.79%, to close at K27.50 (US$1.37). On the loss side, Zanaco dropped K0.02, or approximately 0.22%, closing at K8.95 (US$0.45),” it stated.

According to market data, CEC Plc’s total turnover contribution last week was K1, 005,152.81, equivalent to around US$50,203.92, more than double that of the second-highest contributor, Airtel Networks Zambia Plc, whose turnover contribution was K468, 416.54 during the period under review.

CEC Plc’s share price has steadily declined, reaching K15.01 per share by October 21, 2026.

As CEC Plc’s revenues and earnings are predominantly denominated in United States dollars, the kwacha’s appreciation against major convertible currencies over the one-year period to the third quarter of this year has contributed to the drop in its share price.

Investment advisors emphasise the importance of distinguishing between short-term market price fluctuations and the underlying value, performance and long-term fundamentals of a business.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the capital markets regulator, has equally stated that share price fluctuations on the LuSE are “normal” and do not mean that a company whose shares are listed on the local bourse is declining.
