THE Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested and jointly charged an executive officer in the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services Veronica Chisanga Kabwe and a senior news editor at the Zambia News and Information Service (ZANIS) Chimangeni Banda for alleged possession and concealment of properties worth over K5.6 million.
ACC head of corporate affairs Joseph Mwenya said Kabwe and Banda, both aged 52, of Plot No. 13329 Chalala in Lusaka, had been jointly charged on two counts of possession and concealment of properties reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime contrary to section 71(1) of the forfeiture of proceeds of crime Act No. 19 of 2010.
Mwenya said between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2025 in Lusaka, the two allegedly jointly possessed and concealed two properties, No. L/38829, a semi-detached three-bedroom house, and property No. L/13329, a four-bedroom house valued at K3,270,000, reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.
“Kabwe has further been separately charged with nine additional counts of possession and concealment of properties reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime,” he said.
Mwenya said particulars of the nine counts were that during the same period, she possessed and concealed three motor vehicles, a Toyota Hilux, Toyota Dyna light truck and Toyota RAV4 with a combined estimated value of K1,000,000, as well as money and government bonds amounting to K1,346,578 held in various bank accounts.
The two suspects have since been released on bond and are expected to appear in court soon.
Mwenya said the commission would continue to investigate and take appropriate action against individuals suspected of engaging in corruption.
