…There’s too much anger, Zambians are divided – Saboi

NATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) president Saboi Imboela has said Zambia needs serious healing, noting there is too much acrimony among politicians.
In an interview with The Mast, Imboela said there was too much division and polarisation among Zambians.
“What the country needs is healing and dialogue among political players because as things stand being a politician is now a matter of life and death,” she said.
Imboela said the country needed healing because the elections were now a thing of the past.
She said the 2026 elections lacked credibility and that the manner in which the Electoral Commission of Zambia conducted itself lived much to be desired.
Imboela said she had in the past supported the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) but no longer did because of the manner in which it had conducted itself during the 2026 elections.
“It is very difficult to support ECZ looking at the manner they conducted themselves during the elections. It’s clear that the polls were not free and credible,” she said.
People, especially those in the opposition, were now scared to talk because of the backlash that would follow from the government.
Imboela said the environment was now very toxic as people were being arrested with impunity.
She said on the issue of the treason charges slapped on National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) president Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu was a clear case of political persecution.
Imboela said the country had had a number of treason charges in the past and it was evident that mostly were politically motivated.
“We need to deal with deep tension that has gripped the country by ensuring that there is true reconciliation and healing,” she said.
President-elect Hakainde Hichilema is expected to be sworn in today for his second five-year term.
The ECZ declared him winner of the August 13 election whose presidential result the main opposition losing candidate Brian Mundubile has disputed.
He has since been charged with treason and is languishing in a maximum prison in Kabwe town, two hours drive from Lusaka.
