2026 poll one of Zambia’s worst, says Kalaba

By Thandizo Banda

CITIZENS First (CF) president Harry Kalaba has described the just-ended August 13 general election as one of the most deeply flawed processes in the country’s history.

Kalaba has warned that Zambia risks losing its status as a democratic beacon in Africa.

In a statement issued yesterday, Kalaba commended civic leaders, faith-based organisations and citizens for showing restraint despite intimidation, provocation and systemic irregularities.

Kalaba praised the Tonse Alliance and its leader Brian Mundubile for a spirited and courageous fight under difficult conditions.

“To stand firm under conditions of intimidation, provocation and systemic irregularities requires resilience, conviction and an unwavering commitment to democratic principles,” Kalaba said.

Kalaba said Zambia was once regarded as a model of stability and good governance, but now risked being seen as a nation that was steadily eroding the very democratic foundations it once proudly championed.

“From being a model of good governance, we are now in danger of becoming a laughing stock, not only within the region but across the globe. This is not a label that the people of Zambia deserve,” he said.

Kalaba cited reports of interference with polling processes, inconsistencies in handling materials and uneven application of the law.

Kalaba said the process fell short of democratic standards.

He called for a thorough, transparent and independent review of the electoral process to restore public confidence.

Kalaba said democracy was not just about voting, but about protecting the sovereign will of the people.

“The responsibility for restoring credibility and integrity to our democratic processes lies squarely with those entrusted with managing them. Our institutions must rise above reproach,” he said.

He also extended condolences to families who lost loved ones before, during and after the election.

Kalaba demanded that government issue a comprehensive statement on the issue surrounding former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya, who was allegedly shot in the chest twice by suspected Zambia Army Special Forces who were sent to Mundubile’s residence.

He said transparency was a good starting point for national healing.

“Zambia belongs to all of us. And together, we must reclaim and restore the democratic values that define us as a nation,” Kalaba said.
