Reject HH tribal talk, Tongas urged
By Adrian Mwanza
BWEENGWA independent parliamentary election candidate Cliff Mwiinga has appealed to the Tonga people of Southern Province not to believe claims by Hakainde Hichilema that they were being targeted in Lusaka by people from other tribes before he became President.
Mwiinga said he was sad that such divisive rhetoric was coming from the head of state when he was supposed to champion national unity.
He said there was no need to feel sorry for themselves for being Tonga and that they needed to stop the self pity Hichilema was forcing on them.
Mwiinga said there was a need to change the voting patterns in the region.
“My fellow Tongas, no one is going to beat us if we don’t vote for Hakainde Hichilema. It’s a lie. No one was beating anyone,” he said.
Mwiinga said the President should talk about things like free education and not campaigning on tribal lines.
He said the country was currently divided because of the lack of a unifying leadership.
Mwiinga said Tongas should emulate other tribes in the country who had demonstrated that they did not look at tribe when voting for a candidate.
He said he said he did not know his tribe only until 2021 because of the manner in which people in the south voted.
Mwiinga pleaded with the Southerners to abandon the habit of voting only for a fellow Tonga, which saw Hichilema getting over 30,000 votes and only three for former president Edgar Lungu.
