Police ‘invade’ Mulungushi as Mundubile files

THERE was a heavy presence of police officers in riot gear at the Mulungushi Conference Centre as Tonse Alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu came to file their nomination papers for the August 13 general elections.
Officers armed with buttons and rifles stood vigil in anticipation of huge crowds supporting the former Mporokoso member of Parliament (MP).
The officers had made a route line from Arcades Shopping Centre up to the main entrance of the Hall.
Mundubile, in the company of Makebi Zulu and other senior officials, arrived at Mulungushi International Conference Centre at 14:45 as they were thronged by jubilant supporters who waited for them throughout the process.
The two leaders were later ushered into the waiting room where credentials were verified by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officers as their supporters waited in the holding hall.
There was confusion as police tried to control the situation at the entrance as Zulu was almost stopped at the door.
This infuriated former Patriotic Front (PF) deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri who protested.
“Mwalamucena umuntu [you are going to hurt him]. Let him enter, please,” Phiri protested.
Earlier, Citizens First president Harry Kalaba managed to successfully file his nomination without any glitches.
The filings were expected to continue the following day.
Zambians will elect new political leaders on August 13.
