Church not for politics, says Archbishop Banda
By Adrian Mwanza
ARCHBISHOP Dr Alick Banda has warned the Catholic faithful to refrain from using the Church as a platform for promoting political agendas.
Archbishop Banda said as Zambia prepared for the August tripartite elections members of the Catholic Church should refrain from using houses of worship, religious gatherings and ecclesiastical events as political platforms.
“This year is crucial. We know we are going to have elections and people belong to different political parties. But we should not use the church for politicking,” he said.
In his opening remarks at the Catholic Men’s Organisation (CMO) annual general meeting, Archbishop Banda said while the Church upheld the democratic right of its members to belong to political parties of their choice, people should not start politicking at church.
Archbishop Banda said the Catholic church would not allow at any point any form of politicking at any of its gatherings.
He said the Catholic Church will not allow anyone to use its platform for politicking regardless of peoples status.
Archbishop Banda said people had the right to belong to any political party and it was there right, but the church would not allow politics to be brought to the church.
He urged the church members to be magnanimous to each other most especially during this critical period.
Archbishop Banda said there were other places were politicking could be done and the church was not that platform.
