RESIST ‘SEX FOR ADOPTIONS’

…Women politicians must tell off sex pests – chiefs

By Adrian Mwanza

TWO chiefs have advised women applying for adoption to participate in the August 13 general elections not to be pressured into offering their bodies for sex in order to be picked.

House of Chiefs chairperson chief Choongo and Chief Mulilo of the Senga people in Chama District urged women politicians seeking adoptions not to sell their bodies for adoption.

Chief Choongo said women needed to be very careful and reject any attempt to be coerced into engaging in sexual activities in exchange for adoption.

He said political parties should select candidates on merit and not through illegal activities.

“It is unfortunate that certain political leaders are engaging in clandestine activities like coercing women into engaging in sexual activities just for them to be adopted as candidates for the August elections,” Chief Choongo said.

He said such activities were criminal and all the women affected should report the perpetrators to the police for justice to prevail.

Women needed to be picked on merit and not a situation where they would be used before adoptions.

And Chief Mulilo said sextortion was rife in politics.

He urged political parties and individuals behind the vice to refrain from it.

Chief Mulilo said the country had several powerful women who, if elected, could deliver, but were discouraged because of activities such as sexual coercion.

“It is very disheartening that certain people are selfish to the extent of trying to engage in sexual activities just to get a political adoption,” Chief Mulilo said.

Recently, Nyapachuma Memorial Foundation (NMF) warned women in politics to be wary of sextortion for adoption as the country edges towards the August 13 general elections.
