TWO families are in serious grief after a husband and his wife were electrocuted in Lusaka’s Kabanana Site and Service Township.
The tragedy happened on Thursday after Felistus Mulenga, 24, put the clothes she had washed on the drying wire, which was connected to the roofing sheets.
Police public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the death of the couple and identified the husband as 29-year-old Amos Bwalya.
“The Zambia Police Service confirms receiving a report of a fatal electrocution incident that occurred on January 29, 2026, in Kabanana Site and Service area of Lusaka. The report was received at Kabanana Police Post around 12:30 hours. The incident involved a tenant couple identified as Amos Bwalya, aged 29, and his wife Felistus Mulenga, aged 24,” Chilabi said.
He said preliminary investigations in the case indicated that Mulenga was washing clothes outside the house and tried to hang them on a drying wire connected to iron roofing sheets when she was electrocuted.
“In the process, she was electrocuted. Mr Bwalya, who was inside the house at the time, rushed to assist her and was also electrocuted,” Chilabi said.
He said the couple was rushed to hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Police officers and Zesco Limited officials visited the scene of the accident before the power supply was disconnected to the area.
The bodies are at the University Teaching Hospital mortuary while investigations into the matter continue.
“Both victims were rushed to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead upon arrival. Police officers rushed to the scene, and Zesco Limited personnel were notified and subsequently disconnected the power supply. The bodies have since been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are pending. An inquiry file has been opened, and investigations into the matter are ongoing,” Chilabi said.
