Mwiimbu commends ‘professional’ police

By Thandizo Banda

MINISTER of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu has commended the Zambia Police Service for the professional manner in which it handled Monday’s appearance of Catholic Archdiocese of Lusaka Archbishop Dr Alick Banda at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).

Mwiimbu said the professional manner in which the police officers handled Archbishop Banda’s appear ance and questioning at DEC head office in Lusaka was unlike what obtained in the immediate past.

“In the immediate past, activities such as Dr Banda’s appearance at the DEC offices for questioning by law enforcement officers were usually characterised by the discharge of tear-gas canisters and firing of live ammunition, most often resulting in the loss of precious lives,” Mwiimbu said in a statement issued by Ministry of Home Affairs principal public relations officer Mwala Kalaluka.

He said the police officers’ professional conduct on Monday at the DEC offices was a clear indication that the Zambia Police Service under the New Dawn administration was able to professionally handle multitudes even under pressure.

Mwiimbu encouraged the service to continue exhibiting such high levels of profession alism for the benefit of the nation.

He pledged that the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security would continue to provide the necessary policy guidance to ensure the human rights-centred policing approach is sustained.
