Makebi supports rebirth of People’s Pact

THE relaunch of the People’s Pact Movement (PPM) is a welcome development because it aligns with the aspirations of Zambians, Patriotic Front (PF) presidential hopeful Makebi Zulu has said.
Zulu says PF is never short of options should its court cases drag on before the August 13 general elections and appealed to Zambians to support and join the People’s Pact Movement.
Speaking in an interview, Zulu said Zambians were in support of the People’s Pact because there was a need for a united opposition.
“We fully support the People’s Pact, as we believe there’s a need to come together as a formidable opposition to win the polls and restore the rule of law, respect for democracy and human rights, and restore the relations with the country’s neighbours and basically improve the citizens’ welfare,” he said.
Zulu, a renown constitutional lawyer, encouraged like-minded opposition groupings to join the People’s Pact.
“So we hope more of us [opposition] can join and be part of a united opposition, which Zambians want to emancipate them from their miseries,” he said.
Zulu was hopeful the leadership wrangles in the former ruling party would soon be resolved and be part of the Zambian call for a united opposition ahead of the August elections.
“The resolution of the two matters in court, one pending judgment and the other ruling, will bring closure to the wrangles so that we can forge ahead with party business,” he said.
Zulu, however, noted should the court processes prolong, the party would switch to alternative plans.
“We may join other parties because, as you know, PF is not the paper [document] but the members who are still intact,” he said.
And Zulu who is representing Lusaka Catholic Archdiocese Bishop Dr Alick Banda says the defence team is ready for today’s interrogations at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) offices in Lusaka.
“We will be attending, especially me as counsel for the archbishop, together with others,” he said.
