Gang rapes lone Mazabuka girl, 15

By a Correspondent

POLICE in Mazabuka District of Southern Province have launched a manhunt for a group of men who allegedly defiled a 15-year-old girl in Overspill Township.

The 15-year-old juvenile was defiled by a group of men while walking home from her friend’s birthday party around 23:00 hours.

Police sources said the assault happened last Saturday.

“The victim left home to attend a friend’s birthday party at Njomona Compound in Zambia Sugar Estate, and around 23:00 hours on the fateful day, a taxi dropped her near Zambia Compound as she returned home,” a police source said.

The source said while walking, the girl met a group of men, including a suspect identified as Moze, who took her inside a house and sexually assaulted her.

Southern Province commissioner of police Moono Namalongo said the gang members covered the victim’s mouth with a piece of cloth while they took turns in defiling her before fleeing the scene.

Namalongo said the victim called out for help before a resident of a nearby community went to her rescue.
“Unfortunately, the rescuer found the suspects had already vanished upon arrival. He immediately informed the victim’s brother, who escorted the victim to Mazabuka Central Police Station, where the matter was formally reported. The victim sustained injuries, including pain in her private parts, neck, abdomen and general body pains. A medical report form was issued, and she was referred to the hospital for treatment,” he said.

Namalongo said a docket of defilement had been opened and investigations were underway.

“Efforts are being made to apprehend the suspects who are currently on the run,” he said.

And man of Tolopa Village in Chief Chipalo’s chiefdom in Luwingu District of Northern Province has appeared in the Luwingu magistrates court for allegedly defiling and infecting his 13-year-old stepdaughter with syphilis.

‎John Chanda, 32, who appeared before magistrate Sharon Luhanga, is accused of having carnal knowledge with his stepdaughter and infecting her with syphilis.

‎It is alleged that on December 8 last year, Chanda had unlawful carnal knowledge of his 13-year-old stepdaughter after her mother was away at the farm.

The victim testified that on the fateful day around midnight, Chanda summoned her to his bedroom, where he forced her to undress and had carnal knowledge of her.

After defiling her, Chanda fell asleep, which gave her a chance to run back to her bedroom.

‎‎She said when Chanda woke up, he discovered that the victim had sneaked out and called her back again, and continued defiling her.

‎‎The court heard that the victim revealed her ordeal to her mother when she came back from the field.
Chanda was later arrested.

The case has since been adjourned for continued trial.
