RDA apologises to motorists, travellers

By Tony Nkhoma

WE ARE sorry for the inconvenience caused by the washed away five-metres section at Kankumba on the Great East Road in Rufunsa District, the Road Development Agency (RDA) has told motorists and travellers.

RDA chief communications and corporate affairs manager Anthony Mulowa urged motorists not to panic as the acrow bridge would be completed today following the completion of the detour.

“The RDA regrets the inconvenience caused to the motoring public and assures all road users that every effort is being made to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible,” Mulowa said.

He told The Mast in a statement RDA, working closely with the Zambia National Service (ZNS), had intensified the works needed to restore the smooth flow of traffic.

“The Road Development Agency (RDA), in collaboration with the Zambia National Service, has successfully completed works on a detour to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic at the washed away section of the Great East Road at Kankumba Stream, approximately 87 kilometres from the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) roundabout,” Mulowa said.

He said the installation works on the acrow bridge across the washed away section had significantly advanced and the situation would soon return to normal.

Mulowa said once completed, the temporary bridge would provide a temporary but safe crossing for all road users.

The affected section of the Great East Road at Kankumba Stream was washed away on Thursday following the heavy rainfall experienced in the area.

The disaster resulted in the loss of approximately five metres of the road embankment because of the failure of a steel culvert.

Mulowa advised road users to strictly adhere to traffic guidance and diversion signage that has been installed along the affected route to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow.
