Mundubile warns MPs against taking ‘evil’ Bill 7 bribes
By Tony Nkhoma
PATRIOTIC Front (PF) presidential aspirant Brian Mundubile has warned members of Parliament (MPs) against accepting bribes from the United Party for National Development (UPND) to support Bill 7.
Mundubile, who is Mporokoso MP, challenged fellow members, who had allegedly received payments of K3 million or K200, 000 to vote for the controversial bill to return the money immediately.
“If you are one of the MPs that have received that K3 million or K200, 000 to vote in favour of Bill 7, give that money back now,” he said during a media briefing in Lusaka over the weekend.
Mandible urged MPs to act with honesty and serve the interests of Zambians rather than pursuing personal gain.
“That money belongs to the Zambian people. Members of Parliament come to serve in a representative capacity, not to enrich themselves at the expense of those who voted for them,” Mandible said.
He appealed to MPs to consider the plight of elderly peasant farmers who were yet to be paid for maize supplied to the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).
“Please return that money…it belongs to the poor, especially the farmers who have not been paid. Where is your conscience if you can receive K3 million through corruption from the UPND government?” he asked.
Mundubile questioned the moral character of MPs willing to accept large sums to back a bill he described as illegal, while the majority of Zambians continued to struggle.
“So it’s a call to all honourable MPs banking corrupt money from the UPND in support of Bill 7, which is evil. You must not take money that belongs to the poor Zambian people. That is evil money given to support an evil bill,” Mundubile said.
He reminded MPs that their duty is to represent the people in line with the Constitution, not to enrich themselves.
“Every MP who accepted this money is shameless and does not deserve to be a representative of the people,” he said.
Mundubile described the acceptance of such bribes as very shameful, and that individuals who profited from corruption at the expense of poor Zambians should not hold parliamentary office.
“It’s very saddening to learn that some MPs can exploit the poor for colossal sums of money. They do not deserve to be members of Parliament,” he said.
