Zambians see UPND as an alien government-HH
By Thandizo Banda
PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has wondered why Zambians still consider his administration as an “alien”, four years after assuming power.
Speaking at the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (ECZ) Matero East Congregation during the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in Lusaka yesterday, Hichilema expressed concern that the UPND administration continues facing hostilities it encountered whilst in opposition.
“This is your government, you overwhelmingly elected it under very difficult circumstances. We do not want to go back to the past experience when buses arriving in Lusaka from certain regions were marked and passengers alighting in the capital city were harassed. Even employees of a certain bank donning their red corporate colour were victimised after being mistakenly viewed as our members,” Hichilema told congregants led by Bishop Paul Mususu.
Meanwhile, Hichilema announced that he would tomorrow (Tuesday) hold a press briefing at State House to address concerns of the resurgence of cadreism and political violence in the country.
“Allow me to reserve my comments on this thorny issue for Tuesday ‘s press conference,” he said.
Hichilema condemned the current political violence being witnessed in the country involving UPND cadres.
“I, every day in the morning, receive briefings on what is happening in the war-torn neighbouring countries, and it is quite alarming. So, as a peaceful country, we do not want to head in that direction. Back home in the recent past, we had the so-called commanders everywhere beating up innocent Zambians-aikona man,” he said.
He commended the ECZ church leaders for their visionary role and management over the years and pledged to actively participate in fundraising for the completion of a new church building.
