Malawi poll victory morale booster – FDD

By Thandizo Banda

THE Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has congratulates the people of Malawi for running a successful national elections.

FDD spokesperson Anthony Chibuye said Malawians should be commended for last week’s election which saw the re-election of Democracy Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Professor Peter Mutharika.

“In particular, we take special recognition of the graciously conceding  of defeat by the incumbent president, Dr Lazarus Chakwera. Special note is taken for repeatedly and consistently referring to democracy and the constitution in the presidential conceding address,” Chibuye said.

He said Chakwera and the people of Malawi had made Africa proud by demonstrating to the outside world that it was always possible to hand over power peacefully for the continuation of development for our continent.

“Malawi has once again showcased that democracy is growing.

It’s always important, like Dr Chakwera noted, that politicians must learn to respect the will of the people. When the will of the people is respected, democracy thrives,” he said.

Chibuye said victory in Malawi by the opposition was a great morale boost for Zambia which heads into general elections in August next year.

“As FDD, we are ready to team up with all progressive and unifying political parties which shall deliver victory for the Zambians in 2026,” he said.

Chibuye said the people of Malawi had demonstrated that contrary to assertion by people such as President Hakainde Hichilema that no one would remove them from the presidential seat because people’s will transcended such assertions.

“And our belief is that President Hichilema must start to prepare himself to graciously accept defeat and handover power next year 2026 in the same fashion as his predecessor Dr Edgar Chagwa Lungu did,” he said.

“To our fellow opposition parties who are misguided  and UPND surrogates, like Democratic Party [DP], who went to issue useless and baseless assertion that Hichilema has no competitors, let it sink in your heads that the greatest opposition are the people of Zambia who are feeling the impact of a failed economy, load shedding, tribalism, hatred, arrogance and the lies of the UPND,” Chibuye said.

“Next year is not about those of you who are going secretly to state house and get a few kwachas so that you sabotage the resolved will of the Zambians, it is strictly about democracy, constitutionalism and a better life for the Zambians,” he said.
