FOUR people have died in a road traffic accident involving three motor vehicles on the Mpika–Kasama road.
The accident happened on Tuesday around 20:30 hours at Milunga Village, 34 kilometers west of Mpika central business district (CBD).
Muchinga Province Commissioner of police Denis Moola said the first vehicle, a Mitsubishi Canter registration number AIF 2256ZM, was extensively damaged. It was being driven by 27-year-old Joseph Chisanga of Kamwanya Village.
Moola said Chisanga sustained head and body injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mpika Urban Clinic.
Three passengers on board the Canter also died in the accident.
“They included Kondani Mwanza of Kamwanya Village and two unidentified men, all of whom sustained severe head and body injuries,” he said.
Moola said the second vehicle involved was a Sino Howo truck and trailer registration number ADF 2175ZM/ADF 2233ZM, belonging to Aabrick Zambia Limited.
Moola said the truck was laden with 600 bags of the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) maize destined for Lusaka.
“It was being driven by Gilbert Mwamba, 26, of Garden House, Lusaka, with two passengers, all of whom escaped unhurt. The third vehicle, another Sino Truck Howo and trailer registration number ADF 2206ZM/ADF 2231ZM, also owned by Aabrick Zambia Limited and carrying 600 bags of FRA maize to Lusaka, was left with a shattered windscreen, a damaged cabin, and four damaged wheels, and it was being driven by Victor Kalumba, 35, of Ndeke, Kitwe, who had four passengers. They also escaped unhurt,” he said.
Moola said the accident happened when Chisanga, the driver of the Mitsubishi Canter failed to keep to his lane and hit into the rear wheels of the first Sino Truck.
“He lost control and collided head-on with the second truck coming from the opposite direction, which also overturned after the impact,” Moola said.
He said the bodies are in the Mpika Urban Clinic mortuary, awaiting postmortem.
