ZAF officer impregnates teen daughter

LUSAKA Magistrate Idah Phiri has heard how a 14-year-old girl was defiled and later impregnated by her biological father, a Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Flight Sergeant by rank.
Nelly Nabwela, 38, a clinical officer, told the court that on January 7, this year, around 12:00 hours, the victim and her mother visited her office for a pregnancy test and scan.
Nabwela testified that after conducting the scan, it was discovered that the 14-year-old girl was 23 weeks pregnant.
She said the mother of the 14-year-old girl asked for an abortion, which she declined to perform, as it was difficult to abort a grown pregnancy.
Nabwela was testifying in a matter in which a ZAF Flight Sergeant is facing a charge of incest.
It is alleged that the accused did unlawfully have carnal knowledge of his daughter, resulting in the pregnancy.
When the matter came up for continued trial, Nabwela testified that after gaining the confidence of the victim, she later opened up to her that the father was the one responsible.
“I assured her to say her being 14, she was a minor and it was our responsibility to find out the man who impregnated her so he could be brought to book. With that assurance, the girl opened up and said the man responsible for the pregnancy was her father. I then asked why she didn’t shout or call for help. She said the father was in a drunken state and told her that if she shouted for help, he was going to stab her with a knife,” she said.
Nabwela said she was told that the sexual act that made the 14-year-old girl pregnant happened once.
“Then I asked how often it was going on, then she said it was just once and that it happened somewhere in August 2024. She said the father came back when the mother was already sleeping and wanted to have carnal knowledge of her. So, that’s how he slept with her because she couldn’t call for help,” she said.
The matter has since been adjourned to August 20, for continued trial.
