A TWO-YEAR-OLD toddler is among five people who died when a Scania truck loaded with maize overturned in Nakonde District in Muchinga Province Monday.
Little Eunice Nalungwe was among the victims who were crushed to death by falling bags of maize.
According an eyewitness, the truck driver lost control and caused the vehicle to overturn forcing the bags of maize to spill over killing five and injuring over 15 people.
The eyewitness said the driver of the truck fled the scene of the accident.
Muchinga Province commissioner of police Dennis Moola said the accident happened around 16:00 hours near Air Lodge on the Great North Road.
Moola said the truck was moving heading north and was being driven by the yet-to-be-identified person who is still at large.
He identified the dead as Prisca Namfukwe, 15, an unidentified female adult and Timothy Sichizya, 23.
All died from body injuries.
Others who died were Osward Simumba, 22, and a two-year-old girl, Eunice Nalungwe, who also suffered fatal body injuries.
Moola said the bodies of the victims were in Nakonde District Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination.
He said 12 other victims had been admitted while the other three passengers were treated as outpatients.
On board were 20 passengers who were casual workers for the owner of the vehicle and were all seated on top of the load.
The accident happened as a result of an error of judgement by the driver, whom police re looking for.
