Couple awaits jail term for drugs

A CHINESE couple has admitted trafficking heroin in a Lusaka magistrates court saying they wanted to sniff it.
Appearing before magistrate is
Kexia Zheng, 32, and Chenjiang Chen, 36, are both facing two counts of trafficking in narcotic substances contrary to section 15(1) (2) of the narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances Act No. 35 of 2021 as read with statutory instrument No. 119 of 1995 of the Laws of Zambia.
In the first count Kexia and Chenjiang, on June 24, 2025 in Lusaka, jointly and whilst acting together, trafficked in 0.96 grams of heroin without lawful authority.
In the second count the couple, on the same date, in Lusaka, jointly and whilst acting together, trafficked in 1.49 grams of methamphetamine without lawful authority.
When the matter came up for plea before magistrate Mutinta Mwenya, Kexia and Chenjiang admitted the charges.
Asked by the court if they knew the type of drugs they were found with, the unemployed couple responded in the affirmative.
And asked what they were using the drugs for, they said they were using it for smoking.
Further asked if they had lawful authority to be in possession of the drugs, they responded in the negative.
Kexia and Chenjiang will appear on July 18 for the reading of the facts and sentencing.
They remain in police custody pending their next appearance.
