ORIENTAL Quarries Boxing Promotions has described late former president Edgar Lungu as a dedicated champion of healthy living and sports.
In a message of condolence, Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions manager Christopher Malunga said President Lungu would be remembered for his unwavering support towards the growth of professional boxing in the country.
He said Lungu’s immense contribution to sport and healthy living would always be remembered and missed.
“As Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions, we fondly recall the moment he honoured Catherine Phiri following her historic achievement of winning the World Boxing Council (WBC) Bantamweight title, making her the first African woman on the continent to do so,” Malunga said.
He said Lungu’s recognition signified his support for sport.
“His encouragement meant a great deal to the entire boxing community,” he said.
He appealed to the nation to mourn the departed former President with dignity.
“As we mourn his passing, we appeal to all Zambians to do so in a peaceful and respectful manner. Let us set aside differences and unity in paying our last tribute to a man who served with dignity and devotion…this is a time to come together as one nation and uphold the values he stood,” he said.
President Lungu died on Thursday in South Africa after an illness.
