POLICE in Lusaka have arrested two people suspected to be behind the theft of 1,500 bags of fertiliser from the Export Trading Group (ETG) company warehouse in Chinika light industrial area early this week.
Assistant public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi said the suspects were apprehended after a tip off from members of the public.
“Following a report of breaking into a building and committing a felony therein at the Export Trading Group (ETG) Company warehouse in Lusaka, which occurred between 18:00 hours on April 20, 2025, and 06:00 hours on April 21 in Chinika Industrial Area, police have apprehended two suspects in connection with the incident and recovered 366 bags of fertiliser,” he said.
Chilabi said Sydney Muma, 47, of Kanyama Compound is believed to have transported the fertiliser from the ETG warehouse using a white truck registration number BAR 6490.
He said Muma led the police to Mumbwa District in Central Province where the consignment was delivered and a second suspect was arrested.
“Police received a tip-off that led to the apprehension of Sydney Muma, a 47-year-old from Kanyama Compound. He is believed to be one of the drivers who transported the fertiliser from the warehouse using a white MAN truck bearing registration number BAR 6490. Upon interrogation, the suspect led officers to Mumbwa where the fertiliser was delivered. While in Mumbwa, officers apprehended a second suspect, Andrew Hamunji, aged 38,” Chilabi said.
Hamunji, a businessman involved in Agro-related business, was found in possession of 366 bags of stolen Urea fertiliser each weighing 50 kilograms packed in ETG-branded bags, which have since been recovered.
Chilabi said the vehicle used in the transportation of the stolen fertiliser had also been impounded.
He said both Muma and Hamunji were in police custody as investigations into the matter continued.
