Malunga eulogises ‘Big Boy’ Simuwelu
By Tony Nkhoma
ORIENTAL Quarries Boxing Promotions manager Christopher Malunga says late boxer Michael “Big Boy” Simuwelu will be remembered as a key figure in Zambian boxing.
In a post on his Facebook post, Malunga said Simuwelu’s illustrious boxing career was a testament of his skill, resilience, and determination in the ring.
“His contributions to Zambian boxing deserve recognition, and his legacy should be honored just as we acknowledge other greats in the sport. Let’s take a moment to remember and appreciate his impact on our boxing history,’’ Malunga said.
He said with a professional record of 29 fights, 19 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws, Simuwelu proved himself as a formidable heavyweight.
Simuwelu held the Zambia heavyweight title from 1984 to 1993 and won the African Boxing Union (ABU) heavyweight title in 1987, which he successfully defended until 1988.
One of his most notable international fights was against Lennox Lewis, although he lost the bout.
Simuwelu later moved to the United Kingdom (UK) to pursue his boxing career and he passed away on Saturday March 22, 2025.
