More floods in Zambia expected.

THE Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) says flooding is expected to continue in most parts of the country, especially over Lusaka, Southern, Eastern, Central and Western provinces.

ZMD said it had noted a Tropical low pressure system over the Mozambique Channel with current pressure levels of 992 Hectopascals and sustaining winds at 55 km/h. In a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday the department said during this period, Zambia was forecast to experience widespread rainfall.

The statement said the weather system was extending its influence to much of the southern sub-continent and is responsible for the heavy rains being observed especially over the southern half of Zambia.

“Due to its position in the Mozambique channel, it is maintaining the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) to the southern parts of Zambia leading to widespread rainfall activities with heavy falls; coupled with strong winds mainly affecting the southern half of the country.

ZMD says the the Tropical low pressure system was projected to be around the Mozambique Channel until March 5, 2025 when it is anticipated to be located over Southern Mozambique.
‘‘The soil moisture over Zambia is currently saturated (90%-100%); therefore; flooding is expected to continue in most parts of the country especially over Lusaka, Southern, Eastern, Central and Western provinces,’’ reads the statement.

The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment and the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) have said they will update and advise on actions to take during this period.

Brace for more floods, warns Met.
