A reflective look at the journey with generation gender: Advocating a gender-just and violence-free society

By Merlize Jogiat

WHEN I first encountered the Generation G programme through youth network ACTIVATE! Change Drivers, I was drawn to its bold vision of creating a gender-just and violence-free society. It resonated deeply with my own mission to help individuals break free from abusive cycles and rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. Partnering with Activate! and the dynamic young changemakers involved in Generation G, I joined the programme as a media ambassador where I embarked on a journey of collaboration, advocacy, and transformation—both for others and for myself.

A mission with a purpose

Generation G stands as a beacon of hope in a world where gender-based violence (GBV) remains an insidious challenge. The program’s focus on empowering communities to address systemic inequalities and challenge harmful social norms aligned seamlessly with my work in abuse awareness and healing. From the outset, I knew this partnership would be more than just an engagement—it would be a transformative experience.

Building bridges with education and awareness

One of the most impactful aspects of my involvement was contributing to Generation G’s educational initiatives. I had the privilege of facilitating sessions where participants shared their stories and reflected on how deeply entrenched norms shaped their lives. These were moments of raw honesty and collective realization that change begins with awareness.

In my sessions, I incorporated elements from my own coaching framework, emphasizing the importance of introspection and personal accountability. We explored how individual behaviours—often rooted in unhealed trauma—perpetuate cycles of violence. I witnessed remarkable shifts in perspective as participants began to see their own roles in creating safer, more equitable spaces.

Amplifying youth voices

A standout element of Generation G is its commitment to elevating youth voices. I worked closely with young leaders who brought fresh perspectives and unyielding energy to the table. Their innovative ideas challenged traditional approaches to activism and advocacy. I was inspired by their ability to use digital platforms to spark conversations and mobilize communities. These young leaders were not just participants; they were change agents, redefining what a gender-just future could look like.

Together, we collaborated on social media campaigns and storytelling initiatives that highlighted the lived experiences of survivors of GBV. These narratives served as powerful tools for breaking the silence around abuse and fostering empathy within broader audiences. It was deeply fulfilling to mentor these young changemakers, guiding them to balance their passion with strategic action.

Challenges and lessons learned

Working with Generation G was not without its challenges. Addressing GBV requires navigating deeply entrenched cultural norms and resistance from those who benefit from the status quo. There were moments of frustration when progress felt slow, but these were outweighed by the small, significant victories that kept us moving forward.

Personally, I learned the importance of self-care and boundaries in advocacy work. Balancing Activate!’s activities with the overwhelming number of stories shared by survivors often felt like walking a tightrope. Each story carried a weight of urgency, and it was challenging to prioritize the conversations that needed immediate attention while ensuring none were left unheard. Despite the emotional toll, the support of the Generation G network—a community of individuals united by a shared purpose—provided a foundation to navigate these demands. Their collective strength and shared vision made it possible to keep moving forward, even in the face of daunting challenges.

A Legacy of hope and change

As the duration of my contract with Generation G comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the legacy we have created together. This partnership has not only amplified my impact but also deepened my understanding of what it takes to build a gender-just society. It has reinforced my belief in the resilience of individuals and communities to rise above adversity and create a better future.

The stories of transformation I have witnessed—from young men unlearning harmful behaviours to women reclaiming their agency—are a testament to the power of programs like Generation G. These stories remind me that while the fight against GBV is far from over, every step forward is a victory worth celebrating.

Moving forward

Though my formal involvement with Generation G may be concluding, the work continues. The lessons and connections I have gained will undoubtedly shape my ongoing efforts in abuse prevention and healing. I remain committed to supporting survivors, challenging societal norms, and advocating for systemic change.

To anyone considering joining an initiative like Generation G, I offer this advice: be prepared to be changed as much as you aim to create change. The journey will test you, inspire you, and ultimately transform you. It is a journey worth taking.

Final Thoughts

Generation G is more than a program; it is a movement driven by the belief that a better world is possible. My time with this initiative has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my advocacy journey. As I look ahead, I carry the spirit of Generation G with me, knowing that together, we have sown the seeds of a more just and equitable society.

In the words of one of the young leaders I had the privilege of mentoring, “Change starts with us, but it doesn’t end there. It’s the ripple effect that transforms the world.” May the ripples we have created continue to grow, touching lives and inspiring change for generations to come.
