FOOTBALL Association of Zambia (FAZ) general secretary Reuben Kamanga yesterday visited the home of Under-20 and Zambia Institute of Sustainable Development (ZISD) player Lydia Shamalime.
Shamalime’s plight was brought to the public’s attention through journalist Idah Musakanya whom the FAZ general secretary reached out to locate the 17-year -old rising star in Chainda Township.
Kamanga gifted the family with assorted groceries and funds towards fixing their rental problems.
“We have managed to visit the home of Lydia who is a ZISD player and was part of the under-20 squad at the Cosafa last year. In the short- term ,we have assisted the family with some foodstuff and some money to help with their rentals,” Kamanga said.
“As people may already know, these players primarily belong to clubs and only come to the national team when there are games. We would only encourage our clubs to take care of their players as their employers.”
Kamanga said there were also limitations on remuneration for minors in football as stipulated by FIFA.
“There are rules around remuneration for minors by FIFA which standard is applied for players in junior set ups,” he said.
Kamanga said FAZ would be engaging its membership and also the player representative bodies like the Footballers and Allied Workers Union to find long term solutions to such regularly occurring problems.
