Cop locked up for shooting wife in domestic spat

POLICE in Central Police have arrested and detained a police officer for attempted murder after shooting his wife leaving her battling for her life.
Central Province police commanding officer Lemekani Chirwa said the victim was a 26-year-old woman from Kapiri Mposhi.
Chirwa identified her as Gladys Milala, who is nursing a serious gunshot wound after being shot by her husband, a serving police officer.
“I can confirm that Gladys Milala, a 26-year-old woman, was shot at by her husband, Constable Jonathan Miyoba, both of East Park Compound,” he said.
Chirwa said the shooting happened at around 02:10 hours in Valley View Compound on Sunday.
“On 13th September at 19:00 hours, Constable Miyoba withdrew an AK-47 rifle loaded with 10 rounds of ammunition for guard duties at CAMCO premises. At 21:30 hours, he called his wife to ask for her whereabouts who told him she was at the market with her elder sister, Pecevia Milala, 36, collecting planks for their joint business,” he said.
Chirwa said Constable Miyoba left his post and went to look for his wife at the market and after failing to find her, he proceeded to her sister’s house in Valley View, where he waited until 02:00 hours, when Gladys returned with her sister.
“An argument ensued between the couple, during which he allegedly fired at her with the AK-47,” he said.
Chirwa said the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the upper abdomen.
He said Pecevia managed to disarm Miyoba and kept the gun in the house before handing it over to police at the scene.
“Police officers who rushed there inspected the firearm and found only seven rounds of ammunition remaining, as three rounds had been discharged. The rifle was secured at the police station,” Chirwa said.
He said officers who visited Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital observed that the bullet had entered through the front of the abdomen and exited at the back.
He said Milala had been referred to Kabwe Central Hospital for specialised treatment because of her unstable condition.
